임봉규의 현대적 풍속도

임봉규는 꽃, 나비, 새가 등장하는 초충도, 화조도와 같은 민화 풍의 배경에 여인의 인물화를 그린다. 더러는 단발의 현대적 여인도 있지만 대개는 한국 전통의 비녀와 쪽머리를 한 여인들이다. 이 여인들은 대개 큐비즘의 인물처럼 왜곡된 외양을 한 채, 과장된 포즈를 통해서 가벼운 춘화도(春畫圖) 속 여인의 모습마저 드러낸다. 한국 전통의 민화와 미인도를 재해석한 그의 회화는 등장하는 인물이 다수가 아님에도 현대적 풍속화라 할 만하다. 소박한 정감, 익살과 더불어 현대적 의미의 해학과 사회적 풍자가 일렁이고 있기 때문이다.

Modern Genre Pictures by Lim Bonggyu
Lim draws a figure painting of a woman with a background in folk painting style like Cho-Chung-Do or Hwa-Jo-Do that usually has flowers, butterflies, and birds. The figure can be a bobbed-hair woman in nowadays, but is usually women with a bun and Binyeo in Korean traditional hair style. These women sometimes even look as those in the works of Chun-Hwa-Do, often with distorted appearance like figures in cubism and exaggerated postures. His paintings newly interpreted Korean traditional folk paintings and Miin-Do (paintings of beautiful women), and can be considered as genre pictures even though there are not many figures in the work because there is humor in a modern sense and social sarcasm besides humble sentiment and comedicality.
