서상환의 현대적 만다라

 서상환의 작품 안에는 동양적 세계관으로 가득하다. 더러는 사각의 프레임도 있지만 원형 패널 안에 자리한 기호적 추상은 소우주/대우주에 관한 해석들로 빼곡하다. 그의 작품명 ‘일즉다’는 ‘하나가 모든 것이고 모든 것은 하나’라는 의미의 화엄철학의 ‘일즉다 다즉일(一卽多 多卽一)’을 되뇌게 한다. 개개의 사물이 우주 전체와 연결되어 있다는 이 사유는 그의 작업에서 ‘개안(開眼)한 하나의 눈’이 또 다른 눈들을 만나 집적되면서 세계를 구성하는 ‘기호적 형상’이다. 우주의 거시적 움직임 역시 하나의 작은 움직임으로부터 비롯된다는 그의 작품의 세계관은 가히 우주의 진리를 표현한 ‘현대적 만다라(Mandala)’라 해도 무방할 것이다.

His art is full of an Eastern view of the world. The symbolic abstract, being in a square frame in one timeframe and in a round panel in another, has numerous explanations about microcosm and macrocosm. The title of one of his works ‘Il-Jeuk-Da’ reminds us of ‘Il-Jeuk-Da Da-Jeuk-Il’, which is part of the Hwauom Philosophy meaning ‘one is everything and everything is one’. This speculation that every single one is connected to the whole universe is a ‘symbolic form’ where one open eye constructs the world, meeting other eyes, and accumulating in his works. The worldview in his works is that a great change also derives from one little move, and so it can be easily considered modern Mandala.
